The workload
A Nigerian business runs scheduled imports, reports and maintenance tasks that should continue when office laptops are off.
Check scheduler logs, working directories, environment variables and file permissions. A command that works interactively may fail with a minimal scheduled environment.
Was the scheduler triggered?
Find the expected execution time and timezone, then check the scheduler's service status and logs for that interval. Check the actual crontab for the intended user. System cron files and user crontabs use different formats; confirm the syntax for your installed implementation.
If the job appears late by a consistent amount, compare server time with the expected Nigerian business time. Do not change the whole server timezone without checking the effect on other applications and schedules.
Did the command start in the right environment?
Use absolute interpreter and script paths, set an explicit working directory where needed, and identify the environment variables the job actually requires. Cron does not necessarily reproduce your interactive login environment. Test as the intended account rather than assuming a successful root-shell run proves permissions are correct.
Capture the failure without exposing secrets
Capture standard output, standard error and the exit status in a restricted log. Keep tokens and personal data out of diagnostic output. A blank output file is not proof of success: the command may have stopped before producing a result or written to a different path.
Check overlapping jobs and dependencies
Compare runtime with the scheduling interval. A lock may correctly prevent a new run while an earlier one remains active; investigate the running process before removing a lock. Check database availability, disk space and upstream rate-limit responses. Retrying faster can make these problems worse.
Recover safely and verify the next cycle
Determine whether the original task already completed its external action before replaying it. Use a sandbox or harmless input to verify the fix, then watch the next scheduled production run. Record the job reference, timestamp, exit status and expected output so the same failure is easier to recognise.
Troubleshooting worksheet
Use these prompts in your project notes. Replace general targets with measurements and an accountable owner.
| Decision | What to record |
|---|---|
| Symptom to trace | job duration and overlapping runs |
| First workload checks | Check scheduler logs, working directories, environment variables and file permissions. A command that works interactively may fail with a minimal scheduled environment. |
| Recovery safeguard | Preserve schedules, scripts, configuration and checkpoints. Document which jobs are safe to rerun after restoring the system. |
| Evidence of resolution | A task runs at the intended Nigerian business time and a delayed run does not create an unsafe overlap. |
Will upgrading the server fix a scheduled automation error?
Only if the failing workflow is constrained by a resource the upgrade actually improves. Permissions, missing dependencies, invalid configuration and application logic need their own fixes. Measure the bottleneck and repeat the same workload after any change.
