The workload
A Nigerian business runs scheduled imports, reports and maintenance tasks that should continue when office laptops are off.
Move schedules in a controlled handover. Disable the old scheduler before enabling the new one and verify the next expected execution time.
Prepare the target with scheduling disabled
Match the required interpreter and dependency versions, file ownership, working directories and environment configuration. Copy schedules for review but leave automatic execution disabled. Check connectivity to authorised APIs and databases using read-only or sandbox operations.
Rehearse the same input batch
Use sanitised test data to compare record counts, output formats and runtime on source and destination. Include a delayed dependency and a partially completed batch. Confirm that a restart resumes safely or fails visibly rather than silently processing a record twice.
Record a cutover checklist
Agree a maintenance window in Africa/Lagos time. Pause the source scheduler and wait for its running jobs to finish, or stop them using the application's documented recovery procedure. Record the last successful batch identifier and copy the final checkpoint plus associated data. Check that a monitoring service will not automatically restart the old scheduler.
Enable one destination and observe it
Confirm the target timezone, next trigger time, execution user and access permissions. Enable the destination scheduler only after the source is inactive. Observe a complete production cycle, checking output counts, duplicate identifiers and external side effects rather than relying solely on a successful process exit.
Make rollback depend on the latest data
If no production action ran on the target, returning authority to the source is relatively straightforward. If the target already processed work, reconcile those records and checkpoints before restarting the source. Keep the old server available for investigation with its scheduler disabled; do not leave two active systems as a fallback.
Server migration worksheet
Use these prompts in your project notes. Replace general targets with measurements and an accountable owner.
| Decision | What to record |
|---|---|
| Workload cutover step | Move schedules in a controlled handover. Disable the old scheduler before enabling the new one and verify the next expected execution time. |
| Authority during transition | One named environment accepts final writes and runs active jobs. |
| Validation evidence | A task runs at the intended Nigerian business time and a delayed run does not create an unsafe overlap. |
| Rollback decision | Who decides, what failure triggers it, and how writes after cutover are reconciled. |
Can scheduled automation move with no downtime?
That depends on the application, replication method and consistency requirements. A rehearsed maintenance window is often clearer than an unsupported zero-downtime promise. Estimate the final copy and validation time from a trial, then agree the interruption with the people affected.
