Backup transfer and recovery-time calculator

Estimate backup transfer duration and total recovery time using measured throughput, restoration and validation work.

BINT CLOUD LTD · Published

Use your own figures

Plan infrastructure for a Nigerian team using your own measurements and current costs.

Transfer hours = GB × 8,000 ÷ Mbps ÷ 3,600. Total recovery estimate adds provisioning, restoration and validation time. Units use decimal GB and Mbps.

Calculate your estimate

Use throughput from the actual route

Measure the connection that will carry the backup. A server-to-server transfer and a download over a Nigerian office or mobile connection can have very different effective speeds. Use measured throughput after protocol overhead rather than a headline network-port rating.

Account for more than copying

A recovery includes obtaining a usable server, credentials and encryption keys, configuring dependencies, importing data and checking the business workflow. Add those stages explicitly. If stages overlap, this sequential estimate can be conservative; if work is blocked, it can still be optimistic.

Rehearse with representative data

Try a restore of the expected dataset size in an isolated environment. Database imports, many small files and encrypted or compressed archives can behave differently from one large file. Compare measured completion time with this estimate and record the reason for any gap.

Use the result to improve recovery

If the estimated duration exceeds your agreed recovery target, review copy location, effective throughput, restore automation and the amount of data required to reopen the service. The tool is a planning aid, not an uptime commitment or a guarantee about a hosting network.
