The workload
A Nigerian office accesses shared business files remotely and needs clear permissions and recoverable versions.
Preserve file contents and access-control metadata. Test restoration of a folder with different permissions for two teams.
Identify what must survive

For windows file services, list each database, file store, configuration item and external dependency in a recovery inventory. Record where it lives, who owns it and how you would rebuild it if the original server were unavailable.
Set a recovery target with the business
Agree how much recent work may be lost and how long the service can remain unavailable. These are different decisions: the recovery point concerns missing changes, while the recovery time includes obtaining a server, transferring data, restoring it and checking the result. Match backup frequency and retention to those decisions.
Keep a recoverable copy outside the server
A backup on the same disk can disappear with the source data. Maintain an appropriately protected copy in a separate failure domain and document credentials needed to retrieve it. Encrypt sensitive copies, restrict access and include a way to recover the decryption material without depending on the failed machine.
Rehearse the complete restore
Restore into an isolated environment with outbound integrations controlled so tests do not email customers or trigger live business actions. Check this workload-specific outcome: Staff can open and save permitted files while restricted folders remain inaccessible.
Compare file-transfer volume and simultaneous open files after the restore with your normal baseline. A dataset can be intact yet unusable because an important service, permission or dependency was omitted.
Record the real recovery time in Nigeria
Time the transfer over the connection that would actually be used during an incident. Server-to-server and office-to-server transfer speeds may differ substantially. Add configuration, validation and decision time to the copy duration, and keep the recovery runbook accessible if the team loses its usual connection.
Review failed backup jobs and ageing copies. Retention should follow business needs and applicable obligations; do not keep every customer file forever merely because storage is available.
Backup and restore worksheet
Use these prompts in your project notes. Replace general targets with measurements and an accountable owner.
| Decision | What to record |
|---|---|
| Data to protect | Preserve file contents and access-control metadata. Test restoration of a folder with different permissions for two teams. |
| Recovery point target | Maximum acceptable period of missing changes, agreed with the data owner. |
| Recovery time target | Total allowed time to restore, validate and reopen the workflow. |
| Restore pass condition | Staff can open and save permitted files while restricted folders remain inaccessible. |
Does a server snapshot replace a windows file services recovery plan?
A snapshot can be one component, but its consistency, storage location and retention must be understood. You still need the application data, keys, dependencies and a tested restoration procedure. Check exactly what any provider backup option includes before relying on it.
