The workload
A Nigerian training provider runs lessons, assessments and learner accounts with busy enrolment and exam periods.
Test an assessment submission burst separately from lesson browsing. Video delivery and stored submissions may need a different storage strategy from the application database.
Model a realistic examination window
Illustrative scenario: 600 registered learners, with 120 sitting a timed assessment. Test the 120 active sessions, their question navigation and autosaves, then a concentrated submission burst near the deadline. The figures define a test scenario, not a claim that a particular VPS supports that many learners.
Use test accounts and realistic question types, plugins and course history. Agree acceptable page-response time and error rate before testing. Include a disconnected learner returning to the same attempt.
Measure the application and database together
Record CPU pressure, memory, database query latency, disk activity and web-worker utilisation during the same test window. Separate slow database operations from exhausted application workers. Moodle's performance documentation recommends establishing a measured baseline before tuning; use guidance for the version and plugins you actually deploy.
Budget course storage with a worked example
If 120 learners submit a 20 MB assignment, one round adds about 2.4 GB using decimal units, before revisions, metadata and backups. Add existing course files, logs, temporary upload space and retention. Keep enough free space to complete an upload while a backup or course import is running.
Treat video delivery as a separate decision
A 100 MB lesson watched in full by 100 learners represents roughly 10 GB of payload transfer before protocol overhead or repeat viewing. Decide whether the application server or a separate media service should deliver it. Compare actual bandwidth allowances and costs; separating media does not remove database load from quizzes.
Test from the learners' connections
Check lesson navigation, upload retries and assessment recovery on the Nigerian mobile and fixed connections the school uses. Record the server region and measured response times. A Nigerian billing address does not establish that the server is physically in Nigeria.
Choose a plan only after the busiest test meets the agreed targets. Budget backups, media delivery, licences where applicable and maintenance separately. Repeat the test when enrolment, assessment design or plugins change.
Server sizing worksheet
Use these prompts in your project notes. Replace general targets with measurements and an accountable owner.
| Decision | What to record |
|---|---|
| Representative load | simultaneous assessments and media transfer |
| Business pass condition | A learner resumes progress, submits an assessment once and sees the correct result under their account. |
| Recovery overhead | Preserve courses, enrolments, grades and uploaded work. Restore a learner account and confirm both progress and files are present. |
| Re-test trigger | A sustained rise in the limiting metric, a major application change, or a workload that no longer meets its agreed target. |
How much RAM does learning platforms need?
There is no reliable figure based only on the application name or number of registered users. Measure the active working set during your representative workflow, include supporting services and leave documented operating headroom. Compare that evidence with a plan you can expand when needed.
